Would Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) still say this today? Doubtful.
Then again, Wilde could never have imagined what we would do to the environment; even he was not that wise and far-seeing.
What would he say today?

The wealthy bought their freedom while the poor were left to bleed,
A clever corporate scheme of old, built on financial greed.
You paid the Church to clear your slate for every vice and stain,
And walked away absolved of guilt, to go and sin again.
Now flash ahead five hundred years, the pulpits have been switched,
The panic is identical, the language just enriched.
The doom is now a melting planet, fire in the sky,
And once again, they’ve found a way for us to pay the guy.
They call it "Carbon Credits" or a "CO2 Offset,"
The holy tax of modern times to clear a heavy debt.
The corporate giants build a plant that fills the sky with smoke,
Then buy a "green certificate" to treat it like a joke.
The private jets still fly to Rome, the mansions burn their power,
But they can buy "absolution" by the carbon-credit hour.
The billionaire can cruise the seas upon his yacht so grand,
While telling you to park your car and walk across the land.
It's Tetzel’s box all dressed in green, a secular rebirth,
Where paying cash absolves the sin of living on the earth.
The medieval church is gone, but left a lasting plan:
You monetize the collective guilt, and tax the common man."
