Remembering D-Day 76 years ago

On this day, June 6, 1944 155,000 allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy.

It was the largest amphibious military operation in history.

The D in D-Day stands for 'day'. It was the term used for any important military operation or invasion.

The previous day British bombers dropped 5,000 tons of ordnance on German gun batteries along the Normandy coast in preparation for D-Day.

On the day, 4,000 allied troops lost their lives and a further 10,000 were injured. An estimated 4,000 to 9,000 Germans were lost

This date and the earlier battle at Stalingrad were the two most significant events in defeating Germany.
