The first McDonald's and the last Soviet troops

The brothers were born into poverty in Manchester New Hampshire. Their parents were of Irish immigrants, most likely Ulster-Scots.

On this day, May 15, 1988 the Soviet Union began to withdraw its 115,000-strong army from Afghanistan. They had been eight years in Afghanistan. 14,453 Soviet troops were killed in action in the country.

Afghanistan is the United States longest war. It began on October 7, 2001 and was codenamed Operation Enduring Freedom.

US combat operations officially ended in December 2013 but approximately 14,000 US troops remain in the country.
