Garda Mounted Unit in Dartry Park

Gardaí pose for a picture with
children  in Dartry Park yesterday.
The Garda Mounted Unit was on duty yesterday in Dartry and Orwell Parks and along the river Dodder.

They were ensuring that people were keeping social distancing. A discipline not observed by a number of Irish priests on Friday.

The Garda Mounted Unit was established in 1998. The Dublin Horse Police, which was part of the Dublin Metropolitan Police, was disbanded in 1913 due to a lack of suitable horses for the British military.

The Garda unit acquired its first horses from the North Yorkshire Police when its horse unit was disbanded in 1998.

The Garda Mounted Unit is made up or 15 horses and the Irish Draught Horse is the preferred breed.

Fiachra is the name of the horse on the right of the picture.
