Since September 8, 2025 all new applicants for the State Household Benefits Package are paid the allowance to their nominated bank account or post office.
Up until that date the allowance was credited to one's gas or electricity account.
Why the change? It seems it works out cheaper and easier for the State to manage.
But did the older system not give better protection to poorer and more vulnerable people? It seems to have been a safer method in helping people with their gas and electricity bills.
Did the change get much publicity? It would appear not. Why?
