The notice below appears on Irish Rail's website this morning. The announcement was also made across all Irish radio stations.
Life is fragile, mysterious too. Think of the pain this incident will cause, think of the pain and suffering in the lead up to this event. And then think of the pain and suffering it causes the locomotive driver and the early responders who arrive on the scene.
The incident happened between Thurles and Limerick Junction.
Irish Rail always treats tragic incidents with the greatest of respect and, indeed, need to be commended for their sensitivity and care.
The thoughts and prayer of this blog go out to the person on the track and the train driver.

Major Disruption: Intercity services between Dublin and Cork / Kerry / Limerick
Customers are advised there is major disruption to rail services in both directions between Dublin Heuston and Cork / Kerry / Limerick until further notice.
This is due to a tragic incident on the line between Thurles and Limerick Junction, currently being attended by emergency services. The line is closed as a result until further notice.
Significant disruption is expected throughout the morning, and we are working to arrange bus transfers for affected services.
We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.
