Panama Papers

Don't the Panama Papers give us a tiny glimpse into the mindset of the 'managing class'?

Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, who had called earlier in the day for an independent investigation, told the Guardian: “Three times Downing Street has been asked to provide a full and comprehensive answer. The public has a right to know the truth.

“We need to know the full extent of the links between Britain and the web of tax avoidance and evasion revealed by the Panama Papers at all levels.”

It seems there is something honest anout Jeremy Corbyn.

Lets hope Corbyn has the guts to call out the USA for places like Delaware which top the world list of tax avoidance/money hiding offenders. He could also deal with BVI but it is ridiculous to put Jersey high on the list for financial reform. It has, of necessity, been reforming over recent years and transparency has been improving. For example, beneficial ownership has to be declared there on company formation.

The real problem in Jersey is more deep seated. There is no separation of powers; there had been extensive child abuse in the past; and the absolute priority accorded the financial sector has meant almost nothing has been done about it.

It is now in the final rounds of a public inquiry into child abuse which shows all the signs already of capture by the powers that be. Successive UK administrations, including Labour, have refused to get involved despite being formally responsible for good governance on the Island.

This is where I'd like to see Corbyn face up to the hard choices. Much more difficult than political point scoring.
