The Germans take a day off today as it is their national holiday - Tag der deutschen Einheit.
Twenty four years ago today the GDR joined the Federal Republic and Germany was united or reunited.
Next month will be the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
BBC Radio 4 is currently broadcasting an excellent programme on Germany. The 15-minute documentary, 'Germany: memories of a nation', runs Monday to Friday at 09.45 and 20.45.
