Sorry, Michael, you're wrong there: Gomez was not a member of the German squad this year.
A "classical" striker, his form has been very patchy in recent years, particularly when playing for the national team. As a result, the majority of German fans have no great love for him, the general opinion being that he will inevitably miss a couple of easy goals in every game he plays.
To be fair to him, he spent most of last season out through injury and isn't up to top form yet.
