Following the 'leader'

The lights were at red on Camden Street. The leading car was stopped and five cyclists stood waiting for the signal to change to green.

Still at red, a cyclist approached the red light, slowed down and continued to cycle through the red signal. As soon as he did that, three of the other cyclists moved off and went through the red light.

How many of us follow the 'leader'?

One might go a step further and ask when does teaching/apprenticing/formation move from learning to brainwashing?

What is it about us that tends so often and so easily to follow the 'leader'?
