Dianne Feinstein was a traipblazer fro women in politics

Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein, who died last week, was a trailblazer in US politics.

When she was appointed chair of the intelligence committee in 2009 she launched an investigation into the torture committed by the CIA between 2002 and 2008.

Between those years the CIA detained 119 men at ‘black sites’ - secret locations around the world - and of these, 39 had been subjected to waterboarding, sleep deprivation, sexual humiliation and ‘rectal rehydration’.

In 2015, Feinstein worked with Republican Senator John McCain in steering through the Senate an amendment that reinforced a ban on torture.

She has left a fortune estimated at approximately $88 million. In 2018 she was ranked the second wealthiest senator.

Feinstein was born on June 22, 1933 and died on September 28, 2023.
