A big win for the CDU in yesterday’s election in the eastern German state of Saxony Anhalt. More bad results for the SPD and The Left Party
But the great news of yesterday is that the far right AFD under performed. Polls were suggesting that they could come out the strongest party but fortunately this did not happen.
It means current premier Reiner Haseloff will remain in office and most likely form a government with the SPD and the FDP.
The Greens improved their vote and are in with a chance of joining the new coalition in Saxony Anhalt.
Yesterday’s elections were the last polls before the general election in September and give a fillip to CDU’s Armin Laschet chances of being Germany’s next chancellor.
But what can restore the fortunes of the SPD?
