Arrival at Berlin

On May 1, 1945 the Soviet flag was raised over the Reich Chancellory in Berlin.

There is controversy as to whether or not the flag was hoisted on two occasions, the second time for the cameras. It is said that the order came from Stalin to fly the red flag.

Marshal General Georgii Zhukov promised his German counterpart Friedrich Paulus at Stalingrad that he would take the Red Army to Berlin. He kept his word.

Imagine the  sense of victory. They, against all the odds, had defeated Nazi Germany at Stalingrad and they were now in the heart of Berlin, victorious.
