Some interesting facts and figures about the River Liffey

The Irish Times completed on Saturday a series on the river Liffey from its source not far from Kippure to where it flows into the sea at Dublin Port.

Approximately 7,500 ships come in and out of the harbour every year. Five thousand trucks go through the port every day, 21 ships arrive and depart every day.

Some 36.7 million tonnes of cargo travels through the port annually.

There are over 300 shipwrecks in Dublin Bay.

The source of the river and its mouth are only 22 kilometres apart and yet it is 129km in length. It supplies 85 per cent of the drinking water in the Greater Dublin Area.
