A great newspaper man died today.
Harold Evans was the man who took on the makers of the thalidomide drug and won.
He was editor of both The Sunday Times and The Times. Relatively early in his career he realised the damage that Rupert Murdoch was inflicting on the newspaper industry.
Harold Evans was the son of a railwayman.
He moved to the US with his wife in 1984.
Evans had a great nose for a story but also had a creative sense for layout and typeface.
He began his career on a local north of England newspaper.
