80 years ago the Germans hanged Dietrich Bonhoeffer

German theologian and anti-Hitler protestor Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hanged from a meathook on this day, April 9, 1945 in Flossenbürg concentration camp in Bavaria, just days before the Red Army liberated Berlin. He was 39 years of age.

Before being moved to Flossenburg he had been interned in Tegel in Berlin and then moved to Buchenwald near Weimar, where he was from February 7 until March 3, 1945.

A statue in honour of the man was unveiled in Weimar today. Weimar is some short few kilometres from Buchenwald.
