Ireland’s referendum on same sex marriage

On this day, May 22, 2015 Ireland held a referendum on same sex marriage. The majority voted to amend the Constitution in favour of change.

President Michael D Higgins signed the measure into law on August 29, 2021 and same sex marriages were recognised from November 16 that same year.

Ireland was the first country in the world to change the law on same sex marriage by means of a referendum.
