Priest favours Xi Jinping over Micheál Martin

Below is a link to a Mass celebrated yesterday in the Dominican church in Newbridge, Co Kildare.

In the sermon the celebrant, Fr John Harris says the Irish Government treats the Catholic Church in a more draconian way than the Chinese government under the leadership of Xi Jinping treats Chinese Catholics.

Is this a first for Micheál Martin to be compared in such terms to Xi Jinping?

Is it Covid that is making people say strange things? Probably not.

I would suggest that if John Harris had preached this sermon in China he would now be involved in serious discussions with a number of humourless people from some kind of government security bureau!

I suggest your headline is most misleading & a disservice to Fr John Harris OP

Most misleading? Given it’s the governments that were mentioned, naming the head of government in each case is hardly “most misleading.” On the basis of the reported sermon, I suspect that Fr Harris knows very little about the treatment of Catholics in China. If he did, he would not have made such a fatous assertion.

In Ireland, large assemblies of people are forbidden as we tackle the pandemic. This includes gatherings in churches, all churches,as it does concert halls, theatres, sports events etc. Catholics are not being singled out and if anything is misleading, it is surely the comparison being used by Fr Harris.

It is unfortunate that Ms Kearns did not elaborate on precisely why she believes the original post was a disservice to Fr. Harris.
