Misusing EU finds

French far-right politician Marine Le Pen has refused to repay €300,000 to the European Union after it claimed that she had misused the funds.

It doesn't sound good but how come EU authorities did not notice such a misuse of funds before it reached such a large sum? Or was it a once-off grab?
