The idolatrous calling down of God’s name

US President, Joe Biden in his interview on CBS on Friday said that it would only be the ‘Lord Almighty' who could make him drop out of the upcoming presidential election.

Before the  recent elections in India prime minister Narendra Modi claimed not to have been 'biologically born' but created by God and sent to India as his instrument to govern it.

He reasserted his divine status to the NDTV news channel on May 25 by stating that God had sent him for a specific purpose, and when that covenant was concluded, he would consider his work completed.

“God doesn’t reveal his cards,” Mr Modi said, “but he just keeps making me do things.”

Republican putative candidate for US election Donald Trump admits to having a number of Bibles in his house.

Regularly we see pictures of Vladimir Putin lighting candles in Orthodox churches and blessing himself.

Surely people of great power misusing God’s name?

And another comment about the God question. Are the Christian churches really on the side of the poor, marginalised, the different, the downtrodden, the poor, the weak, the unimportant, the very people for whom Jesus spent his time caring?

As the Leaving Cert examination paper would ask: compare and contrast.

And then all the misplaced/unhelpful liturgical ritual: two terms come to mind 'liturgical lap dancing' and 'clerical pornography’.

Probably provocative, but didn't the pharisees and Scribes consider Jesus to be provocative. Why did they crucify him? Did he ever dress in a manner which made him stand out from the crowd? Most likely not.

It’s so easy to forget the Commandment that we should not place false gods in front of us.
