This is a link to a short interview with the young Lester Piggott on winning the Epsom Derby on Never Say Die in 1954.
It’s a lovely story and shows an interesting side to the 18-year-old, who was to be come one of the greatest ever flat racing jockeys.
The late Vincent O’Brien on one occasion said that Lester was not just the finest jockey of his generation but most likely one of the best ever.
Note how in the clip he says he did not celebrate after the race, instead went home and took an early night. But in fact what he did do after that great win was to go home and work for his father.
