Volodymyr Zelenskyy has invited German chancellor Olaf Scholz to visit Kyiv on Monday, May 9
On May 9, 1945 the final German Instrument of Surrender was signed at the Soviet headquarters in Karlshorst in Berlin.
Until the unification of Germany Karlshorst was a special place of commemoration for the Soviet Union.
Every year on May 9 Russia celebrates its victory over Nazi Germany. In recent years President Putin has stressed the importance of the day of commemoration and has intensified the military aspect of the Moscow parade.
So much about the war in Ukraine is redolent of events that happened in World War II but this time the aggressor is Russia with Germany supporting democracy and the rule of law.
It has great meaning and significance that a German chancellor has been invited by a Ukrainian president on Monday, May 9 in Kyiv.
So far the chancellor’s press office has made no comment about whether or not Scholz will go to Ukraine on Monday.
