11pm in London, midnight in Brussels and 1am in Vilnius

The United Kingdom left the European Union last night at 23.00 GMT, which was midnight in Brussels. In the majority of EU countries it was midnight, in some 01.00 and 11pm in Ireland.

It's symbolic and surely worth noting.

One or two hours behind, catching up.....

Could one say, even the time of the United Kingdom's leaving was done on EU terms?

As the UK leaves the EU, Stanley Johnson, the father of the British prime minister applies for French citizenship.

Below is the link to Angela Merkel's address to the German people on New Year's Eve with English sub titles.

Note how she stresses the importance of EU and international cooperation.

11pm in UK & midnight in Ireland. Have we split the time zones already? A timezone border on the Island of Ireland. They must have missed that in the protocol.

But seriously, I don't know where it's at currently but there were long discussions in the EU over the abolition of Summer time. When I last looked at it, a good while ago, it looked like there could be such a border. I don't know if the idea has been shelved or is due to come into force soon.

Hi Michael, i'm wishing you a happy new year as well!
There is a mistake in your comment: "The United Kingdom left the European Union last night at 23.00 GMT, which was midnight in Brussels... and midnight in Ireland" Ireland and the UK have the same time!

I have just come back from a pleasant cycle, read the blogpost and spotted my silly error. Then I saw the comments of the two gentlemen. Thank you. I'm surprised some of the anonymous brigade did not launch an attack.
Happy and peaceful new year to both of you and again, thank you for your comments during the last year. I'm not sure if Polo knows German, but I know Andreas does, so, ich wünsche Euch einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr.
Never once have your comments been nasty, indeed, they have always been constructive. I know well you do not always agree with what's on the blog. It's a lovely quality to be able to disagree with people and their views and yet respect them. Again, thank you.
And of course I'm delighted you read the blog. Wondering now what you will think of tomorrow's Irish Times piece.

And London in the heading was misspelt.

Danke sehr and the same to you. Only a few words of German, some of them unrepeatable.

Looking forward to your writing in the new year.
