Why is the far-right wing of the Catholic Church so opposed to the European Union?

There is an article in the current issue of The Irish Catholic attacking the EU and especially the person nominated to the the next President of the European Commission.

There are inaccuracies in the article and it would have been helpful had The Irish Catholic spelt Ursula von der Leyen's name correctly.
