Filipino elected Master of Dominican Order

Filipino Gerard Francisco Parco Timoner has been elected the new Master of the Dominican Order.

He was elected yesterday at a meeting of the Dominicans in Bien Hoa, Vietnam.

Fr Timoner has been a member of the International Theological Commission since 2014 when he was appointed by Pope Francis.

Last year he was appointed assistant to the Master of the Order for the Asia-Pacific Dominican region.

Gerard is a former provincial of the Dominican Province in the Philippines.

In an address after his election yesterday in Vietnam he called on the Dominican family to be in communion and to talk with one another, to overcome differences, and agree, "and once we have agreed, I think that it is my job, to be the first among brothers to say, 'We should do what we have set to do'."

Speaking those words as the new Master of the Order, Gerard is most welcome in Ireland.

His words sound prophetic and could be most helpful in the Irish Province where there is close to no communication and little open and honest talking. And any communication that does exist is within factional cliques.

As the Dominican meeting takes place in Vietnam the Irish province receives no daily briefings of what is taking place or being discussed in Bien Hoa.

The new Dominican boss is 51 and is the 87th successor to St Dominic.

Céad Mīle Fáilte to Ireland Gerard. And visit the province as soon as possible please. See and hear for yourself.
