Elber Twomey tells and lives a story of outstanding charity

Elber Twomey from near Newmarket in north Cork lost her husband, young child and the child in her womb in a road accident in Devon approximatley three years ago.

After 19 operations Elber is out and about again, even if, as she says her herself, she has a "lot of metal in the body".

The family was on holiday in the UK when their car was hit by a man with suicidal ideation, who was being pursued by a police car with flashing lights and activated siren.

She is now campaigning that police be given special training in how to deal with drivers with suicidal ideation.

Ms Twomy, a teacher by trade, is simply an amazing woman. She has forgiven the Polish man, who crashed into their car. She has also met his wife. Just before the crash the man and his wife had split up and he was greatly upset about the breakup.

Police in Britain have since changed their operating procedures for dealing with the pursuit of suicidal drivers, and here, two joint Oireachtas committees have backed Ms Twomey’s campaign to secure special training for gardaí to deal with suicide.
Elber Twomey has spoken about how her faith has helped in her ordeal and how it has shielded her from growing bitter.
