The newly elected German Federal President Joachim Gauck gave a moving speech on his election this afternoon.
He began by talking about what a wonderful Sunday in March it was but he was referring to the Sunday in March 22 years ago when the citizens of the former GDR experienced their first free vote.
The assembly ended with the playing of the national anthem.
And the President of the Parliament, mentioned God's name.

Isn't it amazing, Michael, that the secularist Germans, one of those godless European countries from whose ethos the right-wing religious traditionalists are continually trying to save Ireland, are so comfortable with their various ideas of God! Now they've even gone and overwhelmingly elected a Lutheran pastor as president! Of course, he's a protestant so it probably doesn't count.
Even 'worse' than that. They name one of their shedule high speed railway services 'Albertus Magnus'. The train serves Cologne, a city associated with St Albert.
