Recalling the death of Terence MacSwiney in 1920

Terence MacSwiney
the Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney died in Brixton Prison after 74 days on hunger strike.

McSwiney was born on North Main Street, Cork. He attended the North Monastery CBS in the city, later attending Queen’s College, Cork, now called UCC.

 His father volunteered to fight in Italy against Garibaldi. In later life he emigrated to Australia, leaving his family behind in Cork.

MacSwiney’s mother was an English Catholic with strong nationalist views.
