German contest to live in depopulated city proves a hit

Interesting article in the Guardian.

Have Irish authorities ever thought of building a new city. What about somewhere near Mullingar, Athlone or say Monasterevin? Somewhere close to a rail line or waterway and not too far from Dublin.

Michael, it is an interesting story. Why suggest to build a new city “near to Dublin”? Isn’t that exacerbating the problem of the Dublin-centrism the country suffers from? As an example, consider our railways. All the main lines converge on Dublin with relatively poor inter-connectivity. The same was true of our roads for many years but things have improved somewhat with the various intercity motorways - Limerick/Cork being the most obvious exception. A decent rail service with faster speeds would greatly alleviate the pressure on housing in Dublin if people could commute more easily. Mark 4 InterCity trains can reach up to 200 km/h on the Cork Dublin route and presumably tracks and trains could be improved beyond this. If this were planned for, it would mean that you could live well outside Dublin and access it with under 1 hour commuting. But this would mean increasing service times to suit — the last train to Cork from Dublin each day is 2100h which means you cannot attend an evening event in Dublin and get back to Cork by train. Perhaps such an approach would be a much better spend of the proposed €23 billion on. Metro for Dublin. Approximately 60% of the population lives outside the greater Dublin area.
