A staggering €66.7 million crushed to smithereens

Do you return your drink cans and plastic bottles? If so you are one of many who are losing out on collecting the money due to you.

So far a staggering €66.7 million worth of empties has not been collected by the Irish public.

One way that might make it easier for people to avail of the Deposit Return Scheme would be to cash in receipts in any outlet and not have it restricted to the shop where one returned the empties.

So, who is getting the €66.7 million?

Interesting question, Michael. In my home we always recycled our cans and plastic bottles in the recycling bin, as many people did. Now we have to drive to a recycling location, load the items in one at a time, and then queue for a refund. At least in some European countries you can from a large quantity of items into a hopper, and the machine separates them. I wonder what the cumulative cost of driving to the recycling unit, and of the time lost in the process, would come to. There seems to be a real gap in reporting the number of units sold and the number of units recycled. Has the whole process really been a white elephant? Not to mention, of course, that the cost of the recycling bin to households has risen as the recyclers no longer have the offset of the cans and bottles. A further question, largely ignored by those who foisted this on the public, is what actually happens to the “recycled” plastic? Is it used here or are we shipping it all offshore to a developing economy? Just wondering …
