The night Horatio Nelson came a cropper in Dublin

On this day, March 8, 1966

Nelson’s Pillar on Dublin’s O’Connell Street was blown up by the IRA.

Local gossip has it that the IRA operation was technically better than the Army’s subsequent demolition.

The Spire now hold pride of place where Nelson’s Pillar was. The Spire was built in 2003 and is close to three times the hight of the Pillar.
