African American priest asks us to listen to the grief and fury

Fr Bryan N Massingale is an African American Catholic priest, who is the James and Nancy Buckman Professor of Theological and Social Ethics at Fordham University, New York.

"To understand what is happening in the United States, I would ask you not to fixate on the videos of burning buildings, broken windows, and engulfed police cars.

"Listen instead to the grief, the anger, and the lament that too often goes unheard and unheeded.

"Hear the fury of being told too often and in too many ways, "You don't belong".

"And stand in solidarity with those of us who continue the slow, frustrating, painful, and even dangerous work of trying to make this country the beacon of justice that it professes to be."

And then there is this.

This couple with their guns. The stuff of pantomime. How pathetic they look, and obviously are, and all outside their 'mansion'.

The demonstrators seem normal, ordinary, good people.

Michael, it's always good to hear both sides of a conflicted party:

Mark McCloskey said: "A mob of at least 100 smashed through the historic wrought iron gates of Portland Place, destroying them, rushed towards my home where my family was having dinner outside and put us in fear of our lives".

According to police, the couple told protesters that they were on trespassing on a private street and needed to leave. Shortly after, the couple grabbed their guns after noticing several armed protesters in the crowd, shouting threats.

"This is all private property. There are no public sidewalks or public streets. We were told that we would be killed, our home burned and our dog killed. We were all alone facing an angry mob," McCloskey told News 4.
