State pays landlord €1,000 monthly for tiny hovel

The average monthly rent paid by the State to landlords  under the rental scheme is €1,266.

Some weeks ago I was in flat paid for by the State. The bedroom was so small that all that could fit in the room was a mattress. It was a tiny flat, a hovel. The young couple who live in it are vulnerable people.

They told my colleague and me that the landlord earns €1,000 per month for the accommodation.

'Modern Ireland'?

I'm so glad you raised this issue. It's an important issue of justice you never hear about from most pulpits. Often, we are so unaware of the huge economic struggles people have to undergo to make ends meet. Poverty can have a huge impact on mental health and relationships.Maybe that's one reason why so many of the underprivileged feel alienated from the churches? To them, the church is just another 'out of touch' branch of the established order.
