Anniversary of the darkest of days in European history

Today 78 years ago, September 1, 1939 German troops invaded Poland and so began World War II. A war that cost between 50 and 80 million lives.

So, it is sad and poignant that on such an anniversary Britain is conducting discussions to leave the European Union.

Also on September 1, 1939 Hitler signed an order to begin the systematic euthanasia of mentally ill and disabled people.

But because of strong opposition from the Catholic Church Hitler's euthanasia plans were stymied.
