In Leaving Cert 2014, 6,858 candidates sat the German papers, 26,496 took the French papers and 5,340 students sat the Spanish examinations. Italian, 334; Japanese, 298; Arabic, 108; Russian, 292; Latin, 108.
That means 12 per cent of students sat German.
