EWTN - Eternal Word Television Network - a US based Catholic tv station claims charitable status, which allows it claim back money from the Irish Revenue.
This is clearly an abuse of the scheme that the Irish State introduced to help charities.
And to make it even worse an Irish archbishop lauds the station in their material which touts for tax-back money.

Hello Michael.
A question and a comment:
Why is EWTN's participation in the Revenue scheme an abuse? While there isn't a legal definition of "charitable purpose" in Ireland (and there won't be until the charity act is fully commenced) the advancement of religion is part of the English definition of charity. Is this not what EWTN responsible for?
Also, you spelt charitable incorrectly in the headline.
Maura
Thank you for your comment.
Surely the idea in the tax back system is that organisations, which help lell well off people, may apply to Revenue for support.
Many of EWTN programmes come close to sneering and demeaning the views and ideas of people with a different view on life - hardly a charity.
I would also have a problem with that style of commentary and would never support a charity which sneered or demeaned others. However, if its original purpose is the advancement of religion, it is entitled to charitable status.
Thanks for your thought provoking articles.
Maura
