Newbridge College

The Newbridge College class of 1983 held a reunion in Dublin on Saturday.

John Collins organised it. From the Dominicans Jordan O'Brien attended.

Pictures of the evening are being emailed among the group.

Many of the group are involved in interesting and exciting work.

Well done gentlemen and from what I can remember the school had not yet gone co-ed. But that may not be correct.

Unfortunately because of other commitments I was unable to be present. But I was reminded by one of the class the viewings that we had of Rainer Werner Fassbinder films.

A great director and brilliant films.

And there is an irony about the showing of those films and the objections that some people made at the time. It's a funny old world indeed.

Some people might question why the Irish Dominican Province is still involved in 'privilged' education? As far as I know Newbridge College is still a fee paying college. There are no Dominican friars teaching in the college, apart from one who is chaplain to the college. The motto of the Dominican Order is Veritas/Truth, so I just wonder how does the Order/Province justify running a fee paying school? I'd like to know how many pupils from the local community surrounding the college actually attend the college? Taking into account the motto of the Order, surely one would expect a more open and inclusive admission programme.

Thank you for your comment.

Does the province think? Does the present provinical council have any sort of organised coherent philosophy on how the Irish Dominicans should be organised and preach the Gospel?

Actually, there is no Dominican teaching at Newbridge College, who is recognised by the Department of Education.

In fact there is only one memebr of the province, who is on the pay roll of the Department and he is teaching in a non-feeing paying school.
