More harrowing stories about the UK PO Horizon story

Last evening Channel 4’s main evening news reported more harrowing news of the UK Post Office scandal concerning the Horizon IT system.

Channel 4 news played tapes which make it clear that the management at the UK Post Office were lying and doing all in their power to hide the truth.

While sub-postmasters/mistresses were wrongfully incarcerated, the Post Office knew that it was possible to access remotely the Fujitsu IT system, called Horizon.

The tapes make it clear that the Post Office boss, Paula Vennells knew what was going on as far back as 2013.

While sub-postmasters/mistresses were being imprisoned, called liars and thieves, their families suffering indescribable pain, management at the Post Office were lying to protect themselves and the brand.

Fifty two-year-old sub-postmistress Janet Skinner was sent to prison in 2007 over an alleged shortfall of £59,000 from her Post Office in Hull. She had two young children at the time and never allowed them to visit her while she was behind bars. Just imagine the pain the woman suffered and all at the hands of her management.

It is a shocking allegory of how people who are seeking justice are hounded down by those who have power, wealth and resources to support their wrongdoing.

But for the dogged persistence of a small number of Post Office workers, the management could well have got away with it.

It’s a powerful story of our time how the powerful and rich can and do behave.

Paula Vennells was an ordained minister of the Church of England.
