Bank branches disappearing off the landscape

There are at present approximately 500 bank branches in the State.

In 2008 there  were close  to 1,050.

The main banks have outsourced services to An Post, which allows post offices to handle over-the-counter lodgements and withdrawals.

Three quarters of ATMs in the State are owned by unregulated companies such as Euronext and Brinks.

As far as I know, this is partly because the banks' income base has been eroded by the zero interest rate policy.
On the other hand, they want to push the new digital money (which would be programmable).
The new digital money is issued by the central bank and brought to the customer through services like Amazon- or Google-Pay. In this case, the old banks are no longer needed.

With 930+ post offices there are now more than 1400 outlets at which to bank. Why pine for the days when there were just over 1000 and those less evenly distributed?
