Alarming increase in alcohol sales

Sales of alcohol for January have seen an alarming increase.

There has been a 57 per cent year-on-year rise in alcohol sales for the first month of this year.

Why are off-licences open in the current lockdown?

Michael, you're absolutely correct. Down with this sort of thing. The state should step in immediately and close all off-license premises. In fact, for the good of the nation's health they should introduce prohibition of all alcohol, except for altar wine. And a ban on sugar would not go amiss. Nor one on calorific-dense foods, And while they are at it, they could ban those irritating buses running between places like Tralee and Dingle which might sometimes only carry a free old age pensioners with a free travel pass. Of course, they should consider getting rid of the free travel pass as well. Just think about all the journeys that would not happen on our train network, and an added benefit would be the eventual reduction of the train services, with consequent savings, as only fare paying passengers would use the trains. It's been rumoured there has been an increase in the sale of paracetamol nationally so maybe it's time to consider a national rationing system. Now there is an under-utilised idea. Imagine if the state could insist on a limit of the time people spend in public -- that would free up space on our roads and our transport and our public spaces and our parks. Gosh, they could go even further and decide on a national meal plan for everybody in the country which would mean we could rid of a lot of supermarkets and end the problem of food waste. The possibilities are endless. I am giddy at the thought of it, I think I need a stiff drink ...

It's a somewhat lopsided perspective on alcohol sales, given that the on-premises sales are non existent. From the Irish Times:

"Patricia Callan, director of Drinks Ireland, a representative group for alcoholic drinks manufacturers, said with the closure of pubs, restaurants and hotels, they anticipated that off-trade sales would increase.

“However, this increase will not compensate for the loss in sales associated with the on-trade being closed, so we expect that overall alcohol consumption will be down,” she said."

It would be good to see the total alcohol consumptions figures for an accurate comparison.

And certainly there should be a State decree forbidding all anonymity. Those found guilt of the crime should receive the required punishment.
