On this date, Sunday, November 3, 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2, on board was Laika, the first animal to orbit the earth.
The satellite flew over Ireland in the middle of the night; my family got up to see it. We saw this glowing white object fly at great speed across the sky. We were sure we had seen history, only to discover the next day what we had seen was a falling star.
