Mentioning God or God's name should always carry with it a certain seriousness or profundity. It's a name that is so easily abused. It is used in so many different forms and circumstances, it easily loses its importance or meaning.
And then there are those who genuinely believe they know everything about God, even what God is thinking: does God think?
The kings and queens who have committed great atrocities in the name of God, the churches that have abused God's name down the centuries.
As the German army slaughtered, raped and killed its victims the words 'God is with us' was embossed on the belt of every German soldier.
And then last week Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said in television interview that Vladimir Putin's ascent to power was a sign that his country was 'marked by God'.
Sergei Lavrov began his diplomatic service during the Soviet Union era, where it was State policy that there was nod God.
The current head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow is a longtime supporter of President Putin.
Putin, Trump, Iranian leaders, all refer to God, as do so many other leaders, people and religions.
It sure is a funny old world.
