A few random thoughts on national taxation systems

There are over 21,000 pages in the UK tax code containing over 10 million words. The UK has the longest tax code in the world.

Estonia has a flat tax rate of 22 percent, which applies to all items of income derived by a resident taxpayer.

In Sweden VAT is added to all food produce. The current rate is 12 per cent but there are plans to reduce the rate to six percent for a limited period from April 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027.

Grocery bills in Ireland show there are three VAT ratings.

Over the years people who opposed Ireland joining the EU argued that all member States would be forced to have the one tax system.

Not so.

The current US government debt is $38 trillion.
