Fifty years in the European Union

Fifty years in the European Union.

Surely we have to recognise that Ireland is in a far better place today than it was 50 years ago.

I went to Germany for the first time in 1972. It was another world in every respect. That year Joseph Ratzinger was teaching theology in Regensburg.

In spite of what Anthony Coughlan says in The Irish Times yesterday I still think joining the EU was not a mistake.

Happy New Year to all readers of this blog, which is now entering its 17th year. Tempus fugit.

Another 16 years? Who knows?
