The dignity of the person is inviolable

The government of the United Kingdom has begun a process to punish P&O Line for sacking 800 staff.

The German Constitution or Basic Law states in its opening paragraph: "The dignity of the person is inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all public authority."

In German: "Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar. Sie zu achten und zu schützen ist Verpflichtung aller staatlichen Gewalt."

It’s clear that what P&O Line did was barbaric.

Any group or organisation that summarily sacks a person must be made answer for their behaviour. .

The opening words of the German Constitution is a powerful sentiment that gives a confidence to the citizen.

In a democracy no organisation dare disrespect the dignity of the person. And no community, organisation, NGO or church body is exempt

If they do disrespect that dignity, then they must be held to account and pay a high price for their behaviour.
