Olaf Scholz to be Germany’s fourth SPD chancellor

SPD leaders get green light for the new ‘traffic light’ coalition.

At a special conference yesterday at Willy Brandt House in Berlin SPD delegates voted overwhelmingly to form a new government with the Greens and Free Democrats.  The deal was approved by 98.8 per cent.

On Sunday and Monday the Greens and Free Democrats will vote on proposals to join the SPD in government.

Chancellor-in-waiting, 62-year-old Olaf Scholz received a sustained round of applause, which he interrupted, saying: “Let’s go to work now".

He will be the fourth SPD chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. His predecessors were Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt and Gerhard Schröder.

Germany is about to have a great new chancellor and the European Union an enthusiastic supporter among its European heads of government..
