‘We’re in 1938’: Putin’s war in Ukraine, lessons from history

Watching German television news on Friday evening and observing how the police were keeping the right and left apart in Mannheim, one had to be reminded of the chaos of Germany that led to the arrival of Hitler.

The demonstration took place in the city where a memorial was taking place for a policeman, who was killed in a knife attack at an anti-Islam rally. The suspect is a 25-year-old man from Afghanistan, who is living in Germany for over 10 years.

German President Hans-Walter Steinmeier attended the memorial service, where he criticised all forms of violence.
