The new European Parliament lurches to the right

Macron calls an election in France, Marine le Pen’s party makes big increases. In Germany the far-right AfD are now the second largest party after the CDU, the Greens vote collapses, losing over eight per cent, and what is most surprising, people under 30 left them in droves. The new party founded just some months ago by Sahra Wagenknecht collects over six per cent of the popular vote, which is an extraordinary result for such a young party.

The ruling SPD have had their worst result ever, managing to garner only 14 per cent of the national vote.

Ursula von der Leyen expects to be re-elected as Commission president.

Hungarians in large numbers have turned their backs on Viktor Orban. And in Poland it’s been a good result for Donald Tusk’s coalition.

The overall early prognosis is for a lurch to the right in the next European Parliament.
