Victory on the Volga

On February 2 1943 the Soviet Army accepted the unconditional surrender of all German troops in the city of Stalingrad, now called Volgograd.

German casualties were approximately 628,000 while The Soviet Union lost over 1.1 million people.

The Soviets lost 4,341 tanks, 2,769 aircraft, the Germans 1,500 tanks and 900 aircraft.

Friedrich Paulus later worked for the NVA, the army of the German Democratic Republic.

Zhukov had a checkered career, one day in favour, the next day out of favour. Stalin was nervous of him and jealous too.
