Pope Francis talking on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the
Catechism of the Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II said that it was time for offical church teaching to be revised to make the death penalty "inadmissable".
The change, he said, did not make a "change in doctrine" but the recognition that "doctrine cannot be preserved without allowing it to develop".
